While we start getting fearful news reports about possibl killer flu season, it is a good time to think about really great natural flu defense systems. I rarely get a cold or flu, but the only time I do get sick is when my diet goes off the rails, generally only on holidays! When I don’t eat my normal 6-7 servings of fruit and veggies each day, and don’t get my juices, and start drinking alcohol each day, that is when my body start to become susceptible to illness.
We often get a lot of people in the juice bar too, saying that they feel like they are coming down with something and want something that is going to help them feel better.
So here are my all natural flu defensive systems:
Ginger – contains chemicals called sesquiterpenes that specifically target rhinoviruses, the most common family of cold viruses, as well as substances that suppress coughing. I always through a large chunk into a juice, which does make the taste quite peppery, but the burn does make a sore throat feel better.
Lemons/Oranges – are loaded with vitamin C, which is known to support the body’s natural defenses. Add lemon juice to your tea or make hot water and lemon drinks. Add fresh oranges to a juice, or just eat a few.
Garlic – garlic is a triple threat against infection, as it has antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. My dad used to make me eat raw cloves of garlic when I was a kid. It wasn’t pleasant, but it most certainly helped! He used to put it in a hot dink of lemon and honey. Don’t cuddle up close to anyone though.
Turmeric – rich in curcumin and volatile oils that have a protective as well as therapeutic action in persons suffering from cough and cold. Add to your tea, hot water and lemon, or spice up your dinner!
Chilli – they are excellent for the immune system as they are rich in both Vitamin A and Vitamin C. I got a bit of a cold when I was travelling in Thailand recently, and without much access to my usual fruit and vegetable juices and salads, I resorted to overdosing each meal with huge amounts of chilli. Each meal was a little brutal, but absolutely did the trick. They also help to clear congestion without taking any medication.
Manuka Honey – has a concentration of unique antioxidant phenols present in manuka honey that directly inhibits bacterial growth and promotes healing. It has antibiotic and antiviral properties that make it useful for inside and outside the body. When I get sick, I just have teaspoons throughout the day. It is amazing soothing for a dry sore throat without sucking on a lolly.
