When thinking about wintery goodness, it's hard to go past the brassica family. This veggie family includes broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and bok choy. It may be hard to believe, but this awesome group of veggies pack an amazing amount of benefits into each member!
They all contain a large amount of fibre, which is super helpful when wanting to keep your tummy full (and flat) during the winter months. The fibre found in broccoli is particularly known to bind to oestrogen, which can be beneficial during times of PMS and menopause. So if you're feeling extra moody this month, or suffering from hot flushes, steam a cup full of broccoli and eat it with avocado. Trust me on this one - they taste amazing together!
As well as looking after your hormones (and the people around you lol) they also prevent oxidative stress created by free radicals (meaning they keep you looking and feeling young. They also stimulate your immune system which is perfect at this time of year and with COVID still rearing its ugly head. Did I mention they also help prevent cancer from forming in your body? Additionally, they help prevent the proliferation and mutation of cancer cells.
Oh, and kale contains an amazing amount of vitamin K that is essential for bone building!
Lightly steaming broccoli, cauliflower and bok choy will help retain their vitamin C levels. They're delicious paired with brown rice and a splash of soy sauce. Bok Choy and broccoli is super quick and easy to add to any stir fry for a nutrient punch. Don't forget soup - they're the perfect addition to Minestrone soup, or blended together with coconut milk to create a creamy winter indulgence :)
