The middle of winter is the perfect time to up your juice intake. It is the time when spreading infection happens so quickly and easily and all of a sudden you are sick and horrible. But boosting your vitmains and minerals and helping your own body’s defences is the best way to go.
But if you do get sick, don’t just reach for the pain killers or the cold and flu tablets. They will make you feel better, temporarily, but those pills wont actually help your body fight the infection to get over it quicker.
Heres what you could do:
Reach for the vitamin jar – load up with loads of Vitamin C, Echinacea, Zinc, Olive Leaf Extract, it will all help!
Grab some Manuka honey – it has demonstrated antibacterial properties and has been found to be effective against a range of bacteria including the bacteria that causes sore throats. Look for Manuka Honey that has a high UMF, the higher the number the better bacterial killing power. I have this either in hot water to help soothe a sore throat, or just a tea spoon a few times a day as soon as I hear feel a scratchy throat.
Get some fresh ginger -Ginger contains chemicals called sesquiterpenes that specifically target rhinoviruses, the most common family of cold viruses. It has been used for centuries in Asia as a cold/flu remedy. If you make juices/order juices, make sure you get them with extra ginger. Or at home, it is easy to grate up and put in some hot water. Do this about 10times a day, and you will be over it before you know it!
When you grab ginger, get some Garlic too – as a kid whenever we were sick, my dad used to give us hot water with lemon, honey and a great big clove of garlic! It was pretty yuck, especially since he made us eat the whole clove once when we had finished the drink. Now I know why! Raw Garlic has compounds called allion and allicin, which have direct antiviral effects and is best to chew a raw clove every three or four hours. Better to do this on your sick day though, its probably NSFW.
